Palmyra Schoolhouse District 1 was used until 1847 when Union School No. 1 was built nearby on Canandaigua Street. Later William Gardner and Julius M. McLain lived there. When McLain died the property was purchased by attorney (later County Judge) Charles McLouth. The school house was demolished and he built a mansion there that still stands.
